Mary Johnson’s Grandmother’s recipe (1890)


  1. 10oz butter
  2. 10oz sugar
  3. 10oz flour
  4. 5 eggs
  5. Small carton of cream (approx. 4fluid oz)
  6. 1lb currants
  7. 8oz mixed peel
  8. 1oz cherries
  9. 1oz ground almonds
  10. 1oz ground almonds chopped


  • Cream butter and sugar and add the beaten eggs one at a time.
  • Add the flour slowly and then the cream.
  • Stir in all the other ingredients.
  • Bake for six hours at 250F or 110-120C. Mary Johnson
