History Revisited

50 years in the Dales is a project between the Dales Countryside Museum and the Wensleydale School. On the evening of the 5th February at 6.30 we will be having an Open Evening where we would like to invite anyone from the community who would be willing to share their memories with young people from the Wensleydale School.

Refreshments will be provided.

As part of the Hidden History of the Dales project, we invite you to participate in or simply enjoy a unique event on Sunday 2nd December at St Andrew’s Church Aysgarth.

Sun 2nd Dec – FREE Gospel singing workshop

  • led by Edwin Baker of the Huddersfield SDA Choir.

Gospel Singing Performance

The Wensleydale Camera Club are holding their 50th anniversary print exhibition between 3rd November and the 1st December.
It will include more than 80 prints from the 1950’s to 2000.
Members of the club will be giving a slide show at 2.30 on Sunday 25th November.


In the museum foyer there will be a display of children’s photography taken for a project run by Richmondshire District Council. “Snap Happy, Snap Sad will be on show between the 9th and 16th November.

  • it will be delivered by Don Mclennan of the National Park Authority.

Film around Richmondshire present Yorkshire Life Remembered a screening of archive films.
A presentation of archive film footage including film shot locally. This remarkable selection includes early pioneering film of the 1900s, 1930s newsreels, home movies and professional documentaries made about the region and highlights from early television programmes.

  • Hidden History of the Dales opens WOW!
  • The exhibition includes further research discoveries and some fabulous carnival costume from the Leeds Carnival.

  • African Dance and drumming workshops – led by artists from “Africa for All” (Soundjata) teaching music, drumming, and dance rhythms from Zimbabwe, South Africa and West Africa.
  • There will be a 10min performance, followed by 3 sessions of 45 min workshops with 15 min intervals. Max of 20 participants of all ages.

  • Carnival Costume making discover the history and influence of Carnival and have a go at making your own costume

Members of the Textile Pool will be exhibiting a variety of textile work they have produced. “The disappearing world” will be on display from 11th September to 7th October.


Friends of the museum have created an exhibition on Waterpower in the Dales. It will be on show from 19th September – 7th October

The annual summer exhibition this year is based on the theme of geology and runs until the 31st August.
Dales Rocks is an interactive exhibition for all the family about the amazing rocks and fossils of the Yorkshire Dales.

Exhibition – “Hidden Histories of the Dales.”

  • March 23rd – April 19th
  • Admission is free to the exhibition.

The exhibition explores the theme of people of various origins passing through or settling in the Dales for thousands of years. The museum would like to hear from anyone in the community willing to share their own stories or research.
