Peter Leyland will be giving a talk on the story of the Bainbridge Electric Lighting Company at the AGM of the Friends of the Dales Countryside Museum (7.30 pm on 19th October at the Hawes Museum, visitors are welcome to attend, admission £1)
The Company was set up in 1912 as a partnership between his grandfather, John Leyland, and John Cockbone who owned the High Mill in Bainbridge. The water turbine and generating station were installed there by William Handley Burton who had started the first hydro electric company in Wensleydale in 1910 in Askrigg.
The Bainbridge undertaking was carried on by Peters father, John Tiplady Leyland, until his death in 1942 and then by his mother, Isobel Leyland until it was nationalised and taken over by the North Eastern Electricity Board in 1950.
