Tuesday 2nd December, Friends will be in the museum concourse SPINNING A YARN between 2 and 4pm.

Christmas cards from MENCAP are available again in the Museum shop, also a new range of winter clothing, books, toys and recycled gift ideas on display.
Open every day 10am – 5pm.

This year we will be joining the Hawes Christmas Lights festivities.
Over the weekend of 6th and 7th December the museum will be turned into a CHRISTMAS BAZAAR.
There will be activities throughout the weekend for all ages and stalls of Christmas gifts.
Friends will be preparing mulled wine and mince pies and Mother Christmas will be here on Sunday afternoon.

The Garths of Crackpot Swaledale

At 7.30 on Friday 21st November Christine Hallas will be giving a talk for the Friends Of The Dales Countryside Museum, “A Yeoman Dales Family in the 18th – 19th century – The Garths of Crackpot, Swaledale”

7th October – 2nd November

In the main hall there will be an exhibition by a collective of designer makers from the Dales Centre at Reeth.

Monday 20th – Friday 31st October

October is Black History month and we will have the Hidden History of the Dales Exhibition on show from – Monday 20th – Friday 31st October

To celebrate Red Squirrel Week there will be a talk by a Ranger at the museum at 12.30 on Wednesday 8th on Red Squirrel Conservation.

There will be 2 led walks on the 7th and 11th starting from the museum at 10am. The walk is 10 miles and strenuous.
Please book a place on the walks by contacting the museum.

Spinning a Yarn. Museum Friends will be spinning in the museum between 2 and 4pm

Friday 17th

Friends of the Dales Countryside Museum AGM. Followed by a short talk by museum manager, Fiona Rosher, “Clicking on collections”, new ways of investigating the DCM collection. 7.30pm

Sunday 19th

Discover and Do. All day children’s craft activity. Use seeds, leaves and other things to make your own “Green Man” and find out about the changes happening around you in autumn. Booking essential – over 8s only – £2. 11am – 4pm

Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th

Feed the Birds weekend. Come and meet RSPB staff and find out all about how to help the wildlife in your garden and make your own birdfeeder

Saturday 25th

Chainsaw Sculpture Demonstration. Come and watch Andris Bergs create a new wooden sculpture on the museum forecourt.
11am – 4pm

Tuesday 28th

Patch work and Quilting demonstration.
Join Kate Trusson in the museum reception showing different appliqué work using North Country techniques.
Patterns will be for sale 10am – 4pm.

Wednesday 29th

Discover and Do. Children’s craft activity afternoon.
Make African style beads in the Hidden History exhibition and find out how the Dales is linked with Africa and the Caribbean.

We are hosting a very special exhibition from 6th September to 1st October

NEST – a brush with the media is one subject freely interpreted by 45 artists working in a wide variety of media. The concept was developed by Janet Rawlings after finding a birds nest in a besom.

All are welcome to the charity preview on Saturday the 6th from 3pm with a collection for the Woodland Trust.

There are FREE EVENTS planned to coincide with the exhibition:

A besom making demonstration on Saturday the 20th, all day and 2 children’s workshops on 13th and 27th between 10am and 12noon

Friends of the museum will be having an evening lecture by Professor Michael Green, “How the other half died” 7.30pm

  • Free spinning and rug-making demonstration.
  • Examples of weaving, felting and dyeing explained.

Sunday 14th

Introduction to Digital Photography (use of computers) Learn how to download your pictures and manipulate them using Photoshop Elements.

Bring your own camera, computer cable, USB memory stick and packed lunch.
Under 16s to be supervised by an adult.
Not suitable for under 12s.

Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st

Dales Harvest weekend in the Victorian Kitchen

Join Friends of the museum who will be dressing up to explain about working and preserving in the kitchen.

The Found Past

Lawrence Cutting will be exhibiting collages based on found objects in his house.

The artist will be giving a talk on his work on the 25th May between 10am and 12.30 and will be holding a workshop on 31st May between 1 – 3pm

House History at Hawes

An afternoon of lectures and case studies – a partnership between the museum and the NYCC County Record Office.

History Revisited

50 years in the Dales is a project between the Dales Countryside Museum and the Wensleydale School. On the evening of the 5th February at 6.30 we will be having an Open Evening where we would like to invite anyone from the community who would be willing to share their memories with young people from the Wensleydale School.

Refreshments will be provided.
Please come along.
